More than four in ten homes here test high
In El Paso County, over 40% of homes tested between 2005 and 2023 came back
at or above the radon action level. That is not a rare problem in a few
neighborhoods. It is most of the county.
The county sits in EPA Radon Zone 1. That is the highest-potential category the EPA assigns. A high reading in a Colorado Springs home is expected, not a sign something is wrong with the house.
The number to watch is 4.0
The EPA recommends fixing a home at or above 4.0 pCi/L. Below that, you keep
an eye on it. At or above it, a mitigation system moves the gas out from under
the slab and vents it above the roof, before it reaches the living space.
Hiring in Colorado: ask for the license
Since July 1, 2022, Colorado law requires a state license to do radon
mitigation work. Anyone quoting you a system should hold one. Ask for the
number. Ask where the fan will vent. Ask for a post-install test result in
writing.
